11 Aug 2014, Port Clyde and BoothBay Harbor, 43 50.67 N/ 069 37.65 W

Another motorsailing day was in the cards to Port Clyde. Trip was short at about 4 hours. Again we took a mooring ball at the General Store. Not much to see here as the major attractions are the General Store and the Casco Bay ferry. Nevertheless we enjoyed a relaxing evening on the boat.
We saw our first puffin at Port Clyde. But wait! It is a metal puffin. Strange looking beast just sitting and staring at the shore. This puffin lives next to the ferry terminal. Like we said there is not a lot of excitement here.
Next morning we were off to Boothbay Harbor. Weather was nice, wind light, and motor running. There were several areas of high tidal current where several of the lobster floats were either partially or fully submerged. Up goes the stress level again. No fears as we arrived at Carousel marina and took a mooring ball around 1500. Beautiful Catholic church on the hill. When the sun shines in the afternoon, the three crosses appear to glow. Neat.
Boothbay Harbor has a free trolley service that covers much of the town's residential and business districts. We visited the tacky tee shirt area and the local Hannafords. However, we had to head back to the boat early as the weather was starting to turn foul. We spent two more days in Boothbay enjoying the restaurants, tee shirt places and babble stores. Tomorrow we will head for Falmouth/Portland.

17 Aug 2014, Falmouth and Portland, 43 39.984 N/ 070 14.076 W

Left Boothbay on another nice calm day heading for Falmouth which is about 8 miles north of Portland. We are into mooring balls now so we asked for a reservation at Handy Boat marina. The route there was somewhat baffling with all of the islands and ledges. We picked up the ball around 1500. Wow, they even have a launch! So we called for a launch and headed for the marina. Great marina with a great restaurant and cheap mooring balls. In a few days we will leave here and head for Portland where we will meet up with J/K on Wander II.
We arrived in the Portland anchorage early and anchored about 200 m from Wanderer II. Jim gave us some details on the bus system, places to visit, and other good stuff. Later, J/K came to visit for drinks and dinner. Of course they reciprocated on Wanderer II a day or two later.
Today is Sunday so we headed for the local church (actually a Cathedral Shrine) named Immaculate Conception. One of the more beautiful churches we have seen on this voyage. However, the acoustics were not so pretty and it was very difficult to understand the priest.
Later, we received a call from Gene in Portland. He reminded us that we met at Vero Beach where he was on SV Eli Blue. He offered to drive us around Portland and show us the sights. Today is the Lobster Festival so he took us around where we saw the tug pull which involves tugs in a tug of war. He also took us to the local Hannafords. We hope to meet him again when he travels South.
