We left the Wye River for Herring Bay at 1030. The
winds were light getting lighter. We tried to sail for a
couple of hours but decided to quit when the apparent
wind speed indicator went to 0 kts. Gina was wondering
why we were not moving. However, we avoided the numerous
crab pots, buoys, and assorted boats/ships. As we
approached Herring Bay, the wind picked up to
a respectable 10-15 kts out of the South. But we
were almost home!!!! Oh well, there will be other
days.
This completes our shakedown cruises for JULE III.
We think we licked the starter problems. Our Nisson
outboard dinghy motor was still giving us fits...so we
bought a new Yamaha 3 HP unit. We felt the Yamaha
was a good choice for the Bahamas as we would have
a chance of finding spares if we needed them. The
propane sensors are acting up so we are replacing the
sensor and the regulator (just in case we have a very
slow leak). We have several post survey tasks that we
have to perform to keep BOATUS insurance people
happy. We had to do some anchor (bow roller)
re-engineering to keep the chain from over-riding the
roller.
We believe that our water situation is inadequate. We
will probably add a small watermaker and a fresh water
washdown in the cockpit. The combination of wind
generator and solar panels appears to be sufficient to
meet our needs while at anchor.
That should do it. See you next month when we head North.
