We have commissioned a sailing research
vessel (a German built, Matthiesen and Paulsen designed, 12 meter ketch),
the Jule III.
She is equipped with
state-of-the-art communications and navigation equipment that is necessary to support her real
time mission. The heart of the Jule III is the Navigation Information Center (NIC) which
includes the following:
- All Channel Single Sideband (SSB) Radio.
- HF Modem Pactor/Sitor/Packet) for Internet, Weather, Telemetry.
- Global Positioning System (GPS) augmented with Differential GPS.
- Cellular telephone access for Internet, Email, Voice access.
- Multimedia acquisition, database and processing facilities.
- A full service USCG Master's License Training Facility
The Jule III is available for environmental and biological
research within the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. We conducted a
DelMarVa deployment

in mid 1997 to re-validate Jule III's environmental and
communications systems.

She is scheduled for a
research deployment to the Florida Keys, Marquesas, Dry Tortugas, and Western
Florida in late 2000 (really).
