27 Oct 2006, Day 12: Heading to RE Mayo, 35 14.530 N/ 076 35.430 W

Anchors up at 0710 with no winds and a bit of advection fog. There were nearly 2 dozen boats anchored in the areas around Deep and Tuckahoe Points. Moony and Jule III were the second and third to leave. However, true to form most would pass us before the day was out. Why is that Capt. Ron? The Pungo-Alligator River canal was not much of a challenge. There was not much debris in the water and for the most part the depth held at over 12 feet.
As we entered the Pungo there some opportunities for motor sailing. However, the wind was dying and leaving little chance for non-motor sailing. Oh well, this is the ICW. Weather predictions had gale force winds over much of the area within 24 hours so we were heading for RE Mayo in Hobucken where we could hunker down until the storms passed. When we arrived, we discovered the commercial fishing boats were waiting out the weather also. Moony and Jule III found room at the far South end of their dock. How many day would we be here?

29 Oct 2006, Day 13-15: Waiting on Weather in Hobucken, 35 14.530 N/ 076 35.430 W

Time to hunker down again. NOAA is calling for gale warnings on the Pamlico for the next couple of days. That equates to a rough passage to Beaufort NC. So Jule III and Moony decided to rest and relax at RE Mayo. We know Bob is strange as he has always liked "RE Mayo Fish and Bait". But Wolfgang too? We enjoy its peaceful environment, friendly people, and its protected dock. The outhouse leaves something to be desired, but even paradise has some limitations.
We had a bit of excitement on our second day at Hobucken. We had started a walk to the Coast Guard station when Ann yelled as only she can yell. Stop!! A snake! Denise was one meter away from stepping on a water moccasin. They say they are poisonous. That changed our plans a bit. We decided not to walk that day. Two locals chatted with us and told us not to worry. The snake ran away and probably would not return. Cruising is exciting!
The local couple were Sterling and Janet from the commercial fishing vessel, "Southern Lady". We got to talking to them and were invited on their boat. We had a great discussion for over two hours. They invited us to dinner at Gary's in Arapaho NC. Food was great as was the companionship. Southern Lady was due to leave on Sunday, but the weather was still not good and Sterling decided to wait another day. On Sunday we went provisioning with Sterling and Janet. We went to the Piggly Wiggly and the local eatery. Cruisers always like to eat. Later that day, we said goodbye as we were all leaving on Monday.
