01 May 2017, Start of Shakedown Cruise, 34 11.64 N/ 077 48.702 W

Yesterday we left Southport for our mini cruise around the NC waterways. The purpose of our trip is to check out Jule III for our fall trip south. Maybe more important is that this trip will check out our venerable Captain to see if he is up to the challenge after his stroke/heart attack. We will see. Tonight we are anchored for our second night in Banks Channel in Wrightsville Beach. Weather is still unstable for an outside passage to Beaufort, so we will have to do the ICW with its annoying shallows.
J & J came to our anchorage to see why a hull cleaning two weeks ago failed to keep our underwater sensors functioning. They fixed them but charged us for a repeat visit. Later today, the winds came; gales on the outside and small craft advisories in the inside. Good start?

03 May 2017, Wrightsville to New Bern, 35 06.048 N/ 077 02.34 W

Left anchorage at 0610 and passed through Wrightsville Bridge at 0645. Good. Wash down pump was not working. Bad. We missed restrictions by 15 minutes. We dread this inside stretch as it is full of shallows and shoals. We should be passing most of the 'gotcha spots' at mostly high tide. Though we were hopeful for an evening in Swansboro, we were lucky enough to get all the way to Morehead City before dark. (BTW, our good friend was notified today that he will be placed on the transplanti list. The whole ICW could hear us cheer!)
Today, we left anchorage at 0710 on mostly favorable but light wind and current. Mattie K. (apprentice swab cat) is enjoying her time on the water. She likes anchoring and tolerates motoring. We don't know about sailing, heeling, and rolling. She is pretty good with thunder so far.
We enjoy the colorful houses on the Adams Creek cut and creek. The admiral has a favorite one with fancy lobster pots on the outside wall. Weather was nearly calm most of the way on the Neuse River. Arrived at New Bern at 1530 with a quick opening of the Cunningham Bridge. Called Bridgepointe Marina for assistance as we had reservations for A Dock. No joy but nearby slipholders came to the rescue. Thanks!
