It has been a slow couple of years as many of you know due to illnesses and aging dogs. We will continue to cruise up and down the Chesapeake and coastal Carolina while we care for Levi and Gina. The vets are amazed at Levi's health for a 14 year old husky/malamute. We hope that our readers will wait around with us until we are prepared for full time cruising again.

Read your whole article with lost of interest! it will be required reading for my wife too We are planning in going from Deale Maryland Harrington Harbor North to Beaufort NC! then possibly the outside! ending at St Augustine. Im very interested in fixed bridge clearances since Solaris 52 Irwin ketch has a new! shorter main mast ...64.7 feet On the plus side! draft is only 5.5 feet ...so I m hoping to re-do the Dismal Swamp did it 20 years ago on a little Cape Dory ketch. Cindy is new to sailing! so we re taking "baby steps". We will wait a lot! for excellent weather. Solaris is really easy to handle! as long as we plan ahead a lot. Any advice about our total height 64.7 feet and the fixed bridges would be great. It s my understanding that the 65 measurement is at mean high water. Last time! it did matter with a 30 boat! now it does. Thanks! Paul sv Solaris

I want to commend you guys for an excellent resource. I am studying for my Masters License and at the same time for my USCG aux Coxswain and the on line practice tests have helped me signficantly. I do have a question! which has been bothering me! and its probably my nautical stupidity poking through. Relative to the following type question: You see a red light off your port beam and you are heading due east 180 what direction is the other vessel headed. Based on the arc of the vessels port side light relative to your direction! I always come up with a range of possible headings of the other vessel. It seems that there are always two possible headings in the answers that are in range of possibilities. To calculate the range of possibilities I get the reciprocal heading of my vessel add 90 and subtract 22.5 to get the one extreme! to get the other extreme I subtract 90 and 1 to simulate the other vessel not being on direct course for my vessel. I do not use the stern or masthead light in this question since it was not preseneted and the vessel could be a sailing vessel What am I doing wrong I would appreciate your help! thanks and thanks again for making such a valuable resource available.

I am doing some research on my old home! TheFrying Pan Shoals Light Tower. I read where you passed through the slue in the fog and the dark. I did not see any mention of Frying pan on your return trip. I lived on the light tower 4 weeks on-2 weeks off in the late 1970 s. I was part of the next to the last crew theu had before they fully automated her. I was wondering if you had any pictures and/or video that shows the tower I would greatly appreciate any information or input you could provide and/or assist with. Sounds like you had a very interesting journey. Main thing was the 3F s didn t get you. I have seen the wreckage of more than one vessel drift by the tower after the Shoals had taken them apart the day/night before . I thank you for any assistance you may be able to lend. Smooth and safe sailing to you in your future ventures. Sincerely! Michael K. Allen
